NBA Lagos Branch, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Sign Human Capacity Development MOU in Lagos
The Lagos branch of the Nigerian Bar Association is clearly not taking its often-stated commitment to the continuing legal education of its members – especially young wigs – lightly. From all indications, it is ready and willing to explore all opportunities to fulfill that mandate to the letter.
One area in which the Premier Bar believes lawyers should gain requisite knowledge and skill, going forward, is in the growing and dynamic area of Arbitration as an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanism.
To this end, it has entered into a partnership with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) in a bid to enhance the competencies of NBA Lagos members in this vital area of legal adjudication – courtesy of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Lagos on Thursday December 12, 2019.
Welcoming the NBA Lagos team at the signing ceremony, the Chairman of the CIArb, Tunde Busari, SAN, commended the commitment of the Premier Bar towards the empowerment of lawyers, perhaps with an eye on a career in arbitration. The CLE projects of the Lagos Bar, he said, have had immense benefits, as have previous engagements between the two bodies. Busari expressed confidence that more people stand to benefit from this engagement in the days ahead – especially given the Institute’s plans to make pricing more attractive. He concluded his remarks by describing the MOU as a historic seed that is set to grow and blossom in coming days.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch, Omoyemi Akangbe described human capacity development as a key plank of his administration, saying there was no better way to empower lawyers – especially young lawyers – than through the impartation of knowledge and requisite legal skills.
The chairman of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) committee of the Lagos Bar, Tobenna Erojikwe said that although the engagement with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators was just one of many stops in the committee’s drive for greater capacity among its members.
One significant part of the NBA Lagos CPD’s agreement was the negotiation of a reduction of about 50% of the usual cost for the trainings. Also part of the deal, the NBA will provide accommodation for the trainings and entertainment at the trainings. The MOU would ‘reverberate’ through, and serve as a template for all these engagements.
The MOU was signed by Tunde Busari SAN (Chairman of Lagos Branch of the Institute) and Mrs Ebosah Akpata (Director of Training of the Institute) for the Institute and by Mr. Akangbe and Mr. Erojikwe for the NBA.
