NBA Lagos Branch Annual Law Week 2018 Begins
All is now set for the annual 2018 Law Week of the Lagos Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). The theme of the Week ‘Human Capital and the Legal Profession in the 21st Century,’ promises to incorporate a rich curriculum of issues, programmes and topics to be explored by an equally rich faculty of speakers and resource persons.
According to Mr. Tola Oshobi, SAN, chair of the Planning Committee for this year’s edition, the Week will open on Saturday, May 5, 2018 with a Health Walk and a session of aerobics, visits by members to the Ikoyi and Kirikiri prisons in Lagos – an activity which will feature a Legal Clinic for the inmates, and the presentation of various gifts to them. Other activities also include Health Checks for branch members at the foyer of the Lagos High Court, a National Identity Card registration exercise, and a Welcome Cocktail, also at the aforementioned foyer of the Lagos High Court.
According to the Planning Committee Chairman, the erudite legal luminary, Mr. Yemi Candide-Johnson, SAN, will deliver the keynote address at this year’s event, after which participants will sit down at a variety of plenary sessions to explore a number of sub-themes.
A panel discussion on the topic, ‘Client Expectations in the 21st Century;’ ‘Technology & Innovation;’ will be moderated by Gbolahan Elias, SAN, while Prof. Fabian Ajogwu, SAN will headline a panel discussion on ‘Health, Work & Life Balance.’
Another panel discourse, under the intriguing title of ‘The Rainmaker Lawyer,’ will anchored by Mrs. Funke Adekoya, SAN, while Mr. Osaro Eghobamien, SAN will engage the eminent judges of the Lagos Judiciary on salient issues to do with labour and productivity in Nigeria.
A renowned tax expert, Mr. Edem Andah will lead a discussion on tax matters in Nigeria, while an engaging discussion on the impact of technology on the work and livelihoods of lawyers in the 21st century will be moderated by Prof. Doyin Salami, SAN.
The Young Lawyers’ Forum, whose voice is increasingly gaining resonance in the affairs of the Nigerian Bar – and especially the Lagos Bar – will be heard once again, Yimika Adesola, will lead a panel comprising her peers in a discussion on ‘The 21st Century Young Lawyer.’
An Elders’ Night will also be held to honor senior and retired members of the Lagos Bar in recognition of their service to the Lagos Bar. In line with its growing emphasis on health and wellness in a profession whose members mostly operate in high-stress situations, the last day programme will once again feature a Health Walk, as well as an intensive session designed to help participants achieve a healthy work-life balance.
The prestigious City Hall on Lagos Island is slated to host the opening ceremony and other activities, while a closing Party at the same venue will bring the 2018 Law Week programme to a close.
Approved registration fees for participation in this year’s Law Week are as follows:
- 1 – 7 years – N3,500
- 8 – 15 years – N5,000
- 16 – 19 years – N7,000
- 20 years and above – N10,000
- SANs and Benchers – N15,000
Again, the dates for this year’s NBA Lagos Branch Law Week are the 5th to 11th of May, 2018.
