NBA GENERAL SECRETARY MARKS BIRTHDAY AMID AN OUTPOURING OF GOODWILL
Even before her election in 2020 as the second female General Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Mrs. Joyce Oduah, has over the years, cultivated an enviable reputation for the elegance of her carriage and the amiable mien with which she conducts her professional engagements and her interactions with her colleagues and others.
This natural elegance, along with her poised and articulate manner, is an answer – nay, a rebuke – to those who say that beauty and brains hardly coexist in the same person as nobody can possibly be endowed with the full measure of blessings nature can bestow. Not only that, she bestrides a world which for far too long was seen as an exclusive male preserve. This she has achieved with a combination of attributes that has elicited the admiration of those who are privileged to know her in person, or who know of her by reputation.
Born in Akwa-Ibom State of Nigeria (but belonging to Anambra State by marriage), Mrs. Oduah graduated from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lagos in 1990 and was called to the Nigerian Bar as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in December 1991. She later went on to complete her Masters’ Degree Programme at the University of Lagos in 1997.
Prior to her current post, Oduah has served the NBA in many capacities, among which are the following: Rapporteur; Assistant General Secretary of the Lagos Branch; Publicity Secretary of the Lagos Branch; Social Secretary of Lagos Branch; and the National Treasurer of the NBA.
Mrs. Oduah is also a member of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) and was in the Publicity Committee of the Lagos chapter of the body. She currently serves as Chairperson of the FIDA Lagos Property Development Committee, as well as a Member of the FIDA Lagos Litigation Committee. Other bodies of which she is a member are the Eastern Bar Forum (EBF) and the African Lawyers Association (AWLA).
Needless to say, such a record of committed service and active engagement has not gone unnoticed, as Mrs. Oduah has been the proud recipient of a number of awards – most notably the 2019 Award of Recognition by the NBA’s Section on Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL); the Service Award by the NBA’s Lagos Branch (also in 2019); and the 2019 Award of Excellence by NBA, Owo Branch, Ondo State, during which presentation she was also appointed a Patroness of that branch of the NBA.
At the core of Mrs. Oduah’s life and career is her desire to uplift the downtrodden, and to protect the most vulnerable people and groups in our midst. To this end, in 2018 she established the Fountain of Life for the Needy Foundation (a non-governmental, non-profit charity organization aimed at providing for the needs of indigent women, children and youths in the society).
Her standing amongst her professional colleagues, as exemplified by the support she received during her campaign for the National General Secretaryship of the NBA, is a testament to the positive energy and influence she wields in her circle, and her undeniable commitment toward the betterment of the lives of lawyers in the country, and an improvement in the conditions under which they pursue their profession.
As she marks this special day in her life, we at NEWSWIRE Law & Events Magazine join the community of Nigerian lawyers, and Nigerians in general, in felicitating with a modern-day Amazon. This is wishing Mrs Joyce Oduah, the General Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association, many happy returns of the day.
