Well, the Body of Benchers met today and reports reaching us indicate that it is now ready to allow ladies wear the hijab to call to bar ceremonies and Firdaus Amasa will go down in history as the pioneer in this regard.

This was contained in a press statement issued by Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC). The Muslim body in the release voiced its satisfaction with the decision of the benchers whilst congratulating all individuals and organisations who joined the Body in the struggle and the fight against injustices of the islamic religion.

We sincere appreciate to the Body of Benchers for taking their time in reviewing the case of Amasa and for allowing professionalism to be the deciding factor.

Reports from Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) and a tweet from her colleague, Abimbola Amusan in which he wrote:

  • Today history is made. Y’all remember the ”Hijab Lady” right? The one dat wore hijab to her Call to Bar in 2017 & wasn’t called becos of this the body of benchers approved the use of hijab for call to bar. She dared to challenge the status quo. We work in the same firm.

Director of Muslim Rights Concern, Professor Ishaq Akintola, has called for calm among muslim students.

He said, “This mature behavior portrayed by muslim lawyers has earned tons of respect for the Muslims in the country and attracted a Tsunami of accolades.”

“We must maintain this decorum. We cannot afford to be unruly. The Glorious Qur’an affirms that Muslims are the best among mankind. (Qur’an 3:110). The clock is ticking fast and there is no need to be in a rush. Neither should we issue statements capable of generating tension in the land. There is every reason to sustain the status quo,” Akintola said.
