Facing The Future: 2019 NBA Conference Theme, A Call to Action – Olumide Akpata
The theme of the 59th annual general conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is actually a call to action, says the co-chairman of the Technical Committee on Conference Planning for the 2019 gathering, Mr. Olumide Akpata.
He made this assertion in a brief chat with reporters during a press briefing in Lagos. ‘Facing the Future, ’ which is the theme of the conference – scheduled for the Convention Centre, Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos – was, Akpata said, a wake-up call to government, the private sector (including law firms) and all stakeholders in the quest to keep pace with the disruptive technological changes now taking place in our world today. Rather than twiddling our thumbs and allow these changes to take root and consign our competencies to obsolescence and irrelevance, he added, professionals (especially lawyers) and Nigerians in general need to anticipate these changes NOW, and prepare for them with the acquisition of new competencies and the adoption of a new mindset and new paradigms in respect to workplace culture, career development and even lifestyle choices.
He noted that these technological changes are opening up a whole new range of practice areas and hitherto unforeseen opportunities for lawyers and law firms. Many of these new practice areas, he said, would be explored and interrogated during the August Conference, which would examine ways in which young lawyers in particular could be enabled to maximize these opportunities.
Another key area the Conference would look into, Akpata disclosed, was the current state of legal education in Nigeria, which, by common consensus, is well below par and totally inadequate to prepare law students for the aforementioned changes or the demands of tomorrow’s legal marketplace. He expressed satisfaction with the NBA’s present mentorship profile for young lawyers, and pledged that efforts in this direction would be stepped up, going forward.
On the political, economic and security situation in the country, he said, the Conference would deliver a robust and comprehensive agenda for proactive, effective and timely action and engagements on the part of government and other stakeholders on smarter approaches in tackling the current challenges confronting our nation and society, and anticipating emerging ones.
