Building Professional Capacity and Expanding the Frontiers of Law Practice: Friends of Olumide Akpata to Sponsor 30 Delegates to the Practice Preparation Course 2020
In sustenance of Olu Akpata’s long-standing support for, and sponsorship of, capacity building and professional development programmes, Friends of Olu Akpata are delighted to sponsor up to thirty (30) qualified lawyers across Nigeria to the 2020 Practice Preparation Course (PPC), an intensive two-weeks training organised in Lagos by Legally Engaged from 13 January – 22 January 2020. The PPC will feature over twenty sessions on various areas of commercial law such as Taxation, IP, Capital Markets, Mergers & Acquisitions, Banking, Energy, etc.
In addition, there will be special introductory focus sessions for lawyers whose practice may not have involved some of these specialised areas of law. The focus sessions will deal with issues such as introduction to emerging areas of law practice; law practice as a business; preparing for the future of law and expanding the scope of one’s legal practice.
The sponsorship is all-expenses paid and will cover (a) the course fees; (b) travel costs to, and from, Lagos; (c) accommodation, within Lagos, for the duration of the course; (d) feeding, course materials and other associated costs and logistics.
All the sessions will be facilitated by highly-regarded legal professionals who are at the peak of their careers.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
A key goal of this sponsorship is to contribute towards improving the professional competence and specialised know-how of Nigerian lawyers, and is consistent with the long-term objectives of Friends of Olu Akpata. Accordingly, any person qualified to practice law in Nigeria with two (2) to seven (7) years post qualification experience, may apply.
To apply, applicants are to submit:
- (i) an essay of no more than 300 words (in pdf format) on the question: What structural and geographic factors limit or eliminate lawyers’ access to information and training on specialised and emerging areas of practice? and
- (ii) a cover email telling us why you seek to delve into new areas of law practice and why you should be selected. The cover email must also specify the applicant’s full name, year of call, NBA branch, name of employer (if any), and confirm whether the applicant is definitely available to attend the course.
Applications are to be submitted to friendsofoluakpata@gmail.com (with the subject “Application for Friends of Olu Akpata’s PPC Sponsorship”). Deadline for applications is 11:59pm, Monday 6th January 2020. Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted.
