The Bar has no Option than to Unite – Rivers State Governor

The Eastern Nigerian Bar has no choice than to come together as a force capable of influencing outcomes as far as the legal profession is concerned. Rivers State Nyesom Wike, CON expressed this opinion when he formally declared open the 2018 1st Quarterly Meeting of the Eastern Bar Forum at the magnificent NBA Port Harcourt Branch House on Saturday, February 3, 2018. Such unity of purpose, he affirmed, was not only desirable but an absolute necessity at this time of national and local anomie, when the forces of nihilism, irredentism and division are on the rampage at several fronts, threatening not only to tear the fabric of our national sovereignty, but to undermine the very quality of our lives as individuals, families and communities.

According to NEWSWIRE Law & Events Magazine in Port Harcourt, the governor used the occasion to touch upon a number of salient issues of national concern. The scourge of brutal attacks by Fulani cattle herdsmen in recent months, and the proposal for ‘cattle colonies’ in the states, he said, has brought into sharper focus the urgent need for a change of heart on the part of those who adamantly oppose restructuring, true federalism and greater local autonomy in matters that affect the day-to-day lives and livelihoods of millions of our people. Gov. Wike urged the Bar to help undo the damage to the psyche of Nigerians with the emergence of the current administration in Nigeria, and to mitigate the negative economic, social and political trauma that has been the lot of most Nigerians in the last few years.

He also pledged to continue in his efforts to position the legal profession in Rivers State and beyond – Bar and Bench alike – in order to fulfill its historic mandate. Wike maintained that welfare packages for judges – including accommodation – and the proposed commissioning of the Industrial Court in the not-so-distant future, were not just designed to provide a conducive environment for the practice of law and dissemination of justice in Rivers State, but also a larger strategy of infrastructural garden to reinvent the garden city of Port Harcourt and make it the business, socio-cultural and political hub of the Niger Delta region of the country.
