BREAKING: 2 MORE SANS DECLINE MEMBERSHIP OF BOSAN’S ELECTION AUDIT COMMITTEE
Two more Senior Advocates of Nigeria have declined the appointment by the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN) into the Election Audit Committee set up by the body on Friday 5th September at its meeting.
It would be recalled that at the meeting of Friday, BOSAN set up a 5-man committee to audit the elections of 2016, 2018 and 2020, parallel to the committee set up by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) under the leadership of Olumide Akpata. Various lawyers had questioned this move by the body.
Only yesterday, Mr Osaro Eghobiamen, SAN, one of those appointed to the Committee, turned down his appointment, citing BOSAN’s failure to cooperate with the NBA, as one of his reasons. In quick succession, Prof. Offornze Amucheazi, SAN, also appointed to the Committee, turned down the appointment in a letter dated 9 September 2020 and addressed to the BOSAN Secretary, Seyi Sowemimo, SAN.
In what proved to be the straw that broke the camel’s back, J.K Gadzama, SAN, who had been appointed Chairman of the Committee, had in a letter dated 9 September 2020 and also addressed to the BOSAN Secretary, declined the appointment, citing the fact that he was conflicted, having contested in the 2016 elections which he was supposed to audit as Chairman of the Committee.
J.K Gadzama, SAN also noted that the Akpata-led NBA had undertaken to audit the elections and went ahead to urge BOSAN to partner with the NBA in the process.
Nigerian lawyers have not been coy in voicing their concern about the speedy disbanding of the Committee that was set up only 5 days ago and have expressed curiosity as to what the next move of the body will be.
