COVID 19: Payment of Bar Practising Fee, Need for The Attorney-General of the Federation and the General Council of the Bar to Intervene – Ugochukwu Oluoha

So much have been said about the need to extend time for the payment of the annual Bar Practising fee.

I want to lend my voice to the call for extension of time to pay the annual Bar Practising fee.

The issue of 1 year notice to lawyers as it regards the payment of professional fees being brandished by some lawyers against the call for extension of time to pay practising fee to me, is of no moment.

There is hardly any average Legal Practitioner who pays practising fee the preceding year.

It is a fact that once most Lawyers have made payment of Practising fee for a given year, their next target is mostly to make another payment by the next year.

The argument that lawyers have one year to prepare for payment of Practising fee would not fly.

I feel the pain of those who couldn’t pay their practising fee as at when due in the wake of this Covid 19.

It would be very unfair to deny most Lawyers audience in Court, their right to vote and other ancillary benefit accruing from paying Practising fee as at when due, due to their inability to pay as at when due occasioned by what can easily be described as a force majeure (borrowing a contract term).

I call on the Attorney General of the Federation to remedy this situation especially as it regards audience in Court by exercising the power conferred on him in SEC 8 (2) of the Legal Practitioners Act.

The General Council of the Bar should convene a meeting to find a lasting solution in event of future unforeseen occurrence.

Again I make a further plea to NBA to lias with Access Bank to see how to make payment of Practising fee easier for all lawyers Nationwide, especially those who would want to continue paying physically at the Bank.
