COVID-19: Olumide Akpata Wants NBA to Key into CBN’s Intervention Fund
Senior partner at Templars, Olumide Akpata has urged the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, to facilitate access by eligible lawyers to the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Covid-19 Intervention Fund.
Olumide Akpata said: “The CBN recently took the very commendable step of setting up a N50 Billion Covid-19 Intervention Fund for individuals and enterprises that may be adversely impacted by the pandemic. I believe that the NBA should make concerted efforts to see the extent to which our members, who are eligible, can access that Fund as a means of cushioning the negative economic impact which the shutdown of the Courts and Law Firms, on account of the Covid-19, could have on their various practices and livelihood.
“That, for me, is welfare.” Mr, Akpata asserted.
In a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus, the Feeral government had to impose restrictions—halting international travel, closing borders, ordering home quarantine and suspending public events—which has caused major economic slowdown.
The objective of the CBN stimulus package is to reinvigorate the Nigerian economy and prevent recession by boosting employment and spending, thus. lawyers can strive to access that fund to help them make it through this unforeseen coronavirus disruption.
