Ndume, Fani-Kayode, Mailafia Seek Return to Parliamentary System

A former Senate Leader,  Senator Ali Ndume; a former Aviation Minister,  Femi Fani-Kayode; and a former Central Bank of Nigeria deputy governor, Obadiah Mailafia, have said only the restructuring of the country will solve the social,  economic and political crisis bedevilling the nation.

They spoke in Abuja on Saturday at a colloquium organised by the management of the Haske Satumari Foundation in honour of the founder,  Mr Kudla Satumari,  on the occasion of his 50th birthday.

They were unanimous in their submissions that members of the 9th National Assembly Constitution Review Committee should have restructuring at the back of their minds while carrying out the exercise.

Ndume, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, noted that Nigeria was heading towards a total collapse.

Rather than lamenting our woes as a people, the senator asked the leaders of the various geopolitical zones to come together and chart a way forward.

He condemned the current presidential system of government and submitted that it could no longer take the country to the Promised Land.

He said, “Nigeria is fast becoming a failed state. We have a constitution that we have since been amending but it is still not working despite the amendments. Many Nigerians are saying that we should have a new constitution but the process of having a new one is the problem.

“We have had several national and constitutional conferences yet it has led to nowhere. We need to agree on what we need to amend and change in the constitution which would give us what we want.”

Fani Kayode lamented the imbalance in the country and argued that self determination based on restructuring remained the way out.

He alleged that the current system was skewed in favour of northern Muslims while the southerners and northern Christians were the victims of injustice in the land.

He said, “There is injustice in the country. Politicians in Nigeria don’t speak the truth. That is why we are having problems. The killings going on in the country with our leaders doing nothing about it, is nothing but injustice.

“… As situation where every single manager in the NNPC is a northern Muslim; the GMD and the substantive minister who is the President himself, are not left out, is nothing but injustice.”

Mailafia, who came third in the 2019 presidential election in Nigeria,  lamented that the system in the country had jettisoned merit and embraced ethnicity in appointing people into key positions.

He said, “We need leaders in Nigeria who will condemn terrorism and all forms of insecurity with passion.  We should stop paying lip service to the issue of insecurity. We have what it takes to build a great country.

“We need leaders who can take proactive actions  to save lives instead of issuing condolence messages after the deeds have been perpetrated by the evil doers.

“We need to come together as a people to discuss and come up with practical solutions that will address the issue of unity, faith, peace and progress.

“We are reaching towards a dangerous threshold of system breakdown because our constitutions are full of inequality and injustice.
