Police Brutality:
Ohagba Condemns Assault on WACOL Staff, Calls for Immediate Investigation of Case
Abuse, whether physical or verbal, and no matter frequent or long-standing, never ceases to shock and dismay all civilized persons.
It is in this spirit of shock and dismay that Nigerians in general, and key stakeholders in the dispensation of law and order in this country, reacted to the recent case of severe inhumanity and extreme brutality meted on a female lawyer, Ibangah Goodness, Esq in Enugu. Her assailants, believed to be men of the Nigeria Police Force, beat her to a state of coma. According to a report on the incident by Prof. Joy Ezeilo, Goodness Ibangah was working for WACOL, a Non-Governmental Organisation in Enugu.
In his reaction, a former 1st Assistant General Secretary of Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Okey Ohagba, expressed his utter dismay at the sheer demonstration of impunity and lawlessness of the said police officers, describing it as the height of abuse of power, which if left unchecked and unresolved, would set an ugly precedent and escalate into more of such abuses in other quarters across the nation – especially at a time when cases of gender-based violence are unfortunately on the rise. An attack against a female member of the legal profession, he said, was a direct attack, not only on the notion of the rule of law, but also on the dignity of womanhood.
He therefore enjoined all well-meaning members of the legal profession and the society at large to prevail on the Inspector General of Police and the Police Service Commission to, as a matter of urgency, institute a full-fledged probe and prosecution, to ensure that the culprits are brought to book.
Speaking further, Ohagba asserted that the protection of female lawyers must be given the priority it deserves. Female lawyers, he added, must be given an enabling environment to practice their profession and give diligent service to their clients without any fear of police assault and/or intimidation.
He further called on international and National organisations and civil society groups to rise against the scourge of gender-based violence – whether by state or non-state actors.
