Mr. Etta Ukagu’s Abduction is Very Distressing – Olumide Akpata
The news of yet another abduction of a lawyer, this time around Mr. Etta Ebri Ukagu, who was kidnapped by unknown gunmen on Thursday, January 30, 2020 in Calabar is very distressing.
Coming on the heels of the very successful Bar Week of the NBA Calabar Branch, where the Branch inter alia provided free legal services to members of the public, this abduction is very troubling.
As I stated earlier, the security agencies must rethink and rejig their strategies and do more to protect the lives and properties of all Nigerians. This is the basic minimum required of government and as lawyers, we must continue to speak out and prevail on the government to meet this minimum standard. For now though, they must to do everything within their powers to secure the immediate release of Mr. Ukagu.
My prayers and thoughts are with Mr. Ukagu and his family at this trying time. I must also express my solidarity with the Chairman and members of the Doyen Bar who I know are doing all they can to ensure that this ugly episode ends well.
