It’s that time again, when we have to say a fond farewell to another eventful year – to look behind at a year in which the legal community in Nigeria was as busy as ever.
Of course, no other event engages Nigeria’s community of lawyers as intensely as the Nigerian Bar Association’s Annual General Conferences, or AGCs for short. The 2019 confab was the 59th edition of this unique event – one of the largest gatherings of lawyers on the planet. It brought over 11, 000 lawyers from all 125 branches of the association, as well as influential and knowledgeable experts and players from across the globe, to Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, to discuss topical issues and emerging trends, opportunities and challenges in the 21st century legal as well as business and socio-political spaces. Read the highlights here, and enjoy our images of an event that will linger long in the memory.
The late legal luminary, Deji Sasegbon, SAN, may have departed this mortal plane, but his legacy is indelible. A large part of his reputation as a frontline legal scholar was formed courtesy of his prodigious output of works – notably encyclopaedic volumes on various legal subjects. One of these works, Sasegbon’s Judicial Dictionary of Nigerian Law (a 7-Volume compendium of legal words and phrases) was still in the works when he passed on in 2016. Eventually completed and published by his widow, Oge and the editorial team he left behind, the Volumes were launched to great fanfare at an event that had in attendance Nigeria’s vice-president, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, GCON, SAN. See what transpired there, right here on our pages.
In the run-up to the launch ceremony, we also sat down with Mrs. Oge Sasegbon on a wide range of issues – her life with the late Deji Sasegbon, SAN; her work to preserve his memory and legacy, etc. It’s a touching chronicle of a devoted wife’s labour of love.
Mr. Andrew Odum, a lawyer and aide to the Governor of Delta State, was the cynosure of all eyes in the Nigerian legal community at the formal opening of his new law chambers in Asaba, the state capital. Named, Seat of Wisdom, the edifice is a boost to the emerging skyline of Asaba, the fast-modernising jewel on the banks of the River Niger. NEWSWIRE brings you the highlights of the brief but colourful ceremony.
