Sex-for-Grades: A Reflection of the Corruption in Nigeria – Justice Ayotunde Phillips
The Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission and former Chief Judge of Lagos State, retired Justice Ayotunde Phillips, in her displeasure on the issue of sex-for-grades that was on the front burner recently, said, “there has to be some form of attitude change in our young folks so that they can be better protected from such sexual harassments.”
She said, “It is very unfortunate. The menace of sex-for-marks has been happening for a long time. It just seems to have reached alarming proportions now.”
As a student of the University of Lagos between 1969 and 1973, I know that there were things like that. But then, some ladies were interested in having relationships with lecturers; I don’t think they were forced. There were students who were dating lecturers and we used to see them coming out of lecturers’ offices at various times. But things have obviously reached alarming proportions now. These days, there are smart phones that can record whatever transpired and it can be shared on social media. I wonder if some female lecturers do the same thing to male students.
However, what is happening now is a reflection of the corruption that has permeated society. Because they know they cannot get anywhere with a third class, some students want to get a first class at all cost, even if they don’t merit it.
There has to be some form of attitude change in our young folks. I am happy that some girls are screaming out, but I am sure that while some are exposing it, some are accommodating it because they are more focused on what they want to get at the end of the day.
Also, the university authorities have to take drastic actions. They can’t just slap an erring lecturer on the wrist. Any lecturer that is caught in the act should be dismissed and should not be employed in any other institution because (the act) is a breach of trust. Lecturers are there to teach, not to indulge in sexual fantasies and activities with their students.
There should also be whistle blowers in the university who would speak out whenever they suspect such things going on. I believe desperate measures need to be taken in this situation.
Many of our universities are not recognised abroad because of the academic problems and constant strikes they are grappling with. Adding this to it would practically destroy our educational system. I went to elementary, secondary school, university and law school here and I believe I can hold my own anywhere in the world. There was nothing wrong with our educational system when I was a student. Back then, if anybody went abroad to study, it was because no university here admitted them. But now, students leave here because our universities are second rate. One could read law here but if one travels abroad, one would have to do several exams before one can be eligible to practise. That should not be the case at all.
Vice Chancellors should do something drastic about the menace and craft very serious punishments. In fact, there should be a register for those who are convicted of sexual offences.
