Young Lawyers Debate Topical Issues & Trends in the Legal Profession at the 2019 NBASBL Confab

The curtain of the programme of intellectual exchange at the 13th annual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) was drawn with a debate among leading young lawyers on four topical issues and trends of concern to them in particular, and the profession in general. Moderated by the duo of Isaiah Bozimo, a Partner at the law firm of Broderick Bozimo & Co., and Yimika Adesola, CEO of Legally Engaged, Nigeria’s first career centre for lawyers, the session was an exchange in every sense of the word, as debated engaged one another in an animated discussion of four propositions having to do with a) the future structure of law firms; and b) the divergent interests of the Millennial generation of lawyers.

The four propositions were as follows:

  • How long does it (and should it) take for a young lawyer to make Partner? Should the time-frame be shortened? (Derin Fagbure, a senior associate at the law firm of Esther & Makarios spoke in favour of a shortened time-frame, while Abayomi Adebanjo, a managing associate at the firm of Jackson, Etti & Edu spoke against).

Does diversity matter for Partnership in a law firm? Should it? (Orji Uka Agwu said it should, while Fatima Dattijo, a senior associate at Miyetti Law, said not).

Is an equitable work/life balance possible in a law firm? Does it have any impact on quality of legal services? What is the case for flexible work hours? (Simi Opeyemi, an associate with George Etomi & Partners, was in favour of flexible work hours, while Amazing Ikpala (incidentally the Winner of the SBL’s 2019 #GIE Challenge) spoke against any dilution of the schedule of successful law firms.

  • Should young lawyers start to specialize early in their careers, or is a generalist approach fundamental to their training and evolution as legal professionals? (Obashola Haruna, a member of the association of legal administrators of Nigeria was in favour of early specialization, while Adeola Ajayi, an associate with the law firm of Udo-Udoma & Belo-Osagie, preferred the generalist path to career growth).

The debate was – as the organizers had promised – a fiery and animated but ultimately light-hearted contest of ideas and positions which helped set the tone for the drawing down of what had been a rich and highly-engaging conference experience.
