Beloved reader / subscriber,
What a privilege to once again bring to your doorstep our unique take on the happenings that give life to the vibrant world of law in Nigeria and beyond!
It’s a privilege we take extremely seriously as we strive to outdo ourselves with every issue of this publication in our effort to showcase the events, trends and topical issues that engage the minds of legal practitioners – whether at the Bar or on the Bench – as well as other stakeholders in our quest to build a society anchored on the rule of law.

One of the most important issues that engaged the minds of Nigeria’s legal community as the year 2018 unfolded was the reform of criminal justice laws in our statute books – for which reason delegates from across the nation gathered in Asaba, the serene but lively capital of Delta State for the NBA Criminal Justice Reform Conference, which was declared open by the Governor of the state, Sen. Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa. It was an opportunity for the government and people of the state that calls itself ‘The Big Heart’ to display their well-known hospitality.

Ethical, efficient and result-oriented corporate governance and how to engender it across the nation’s economic life was another issue that brought lawyers and other stakeholders together to rub minds and share ideas. The Alliance law firm, known for its innovative services to its diverse clientele, made the issue of corporate governance the focal point of its maiden lecture at the Radisson Blu Hotel on Victoria Island, Lagos. With a cast of speakers such as Professors Pat Utomi and Fabian Ajogwu, SAN, as well as panelists and resource persons driving the discussion, it was an intellectual feast worthy of the topic.

It was indeed a season of soul-searching among lawyers – on both the professional and socio-political fronts. The 2018 edition of the annual Law Week of the NBA’s Lagos Week was held under the theme ‘Human Capital & the Legal Profession in the 21st Century.’ Its versatile programme emphasized health, wellness and having a sense (with activities such as the Health Walk, the Ankara Rave, and the Elders’ Night, etc.). You’ll find it all here, in full colour. It’s like being there yourself.

The months of June and July were particularly busy for the Bar and the Bench respectively, as they held two major events in Abuja, the nation’s capital in quick succession. The NBA’s Section on Business Law (SBL) convened at the prestigious Transcorp Hilton Hotel to explore the topic: ‘Bringing down the Barrier – the Law as a Vehicle for Intra-African Trade.’

The colorful and robust discussions that animated the Conference were replicated about a week later in the equally majestic surroundings of the Abuja Sheraton Hotel, where Judges and Justices from Nigeria were joined by their counterparts from the West African countries Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and the Gambia for the biennial International Maritime Seminar for Judges, under the auspices of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council and the Federal Ministry of Transport.

The last three months were also a period of celebrating important landmarks, both personal and career-wise. For Augustine O. Alegeh, SAN, the former President of the NBA, the formal opening of his new offices in Lagos was yet another signpost on a long and eventful journey – as a lawyer and as a man. And the caliber of personalities that came from far and near was in itself a tribute to a remarkable lawyer and leader of men. It’s all here, in our pages.

There’s something about football that brings people together; lawyers are no exception, as they showed that they, too, are not immune to the lure of the beautiful game. If the Eastern Bar Forum Unity Cup Football has proved anything, it is that the legal profession is a veritable hotbed of footballing talent. The Final of the tournament in Enugu, in which the Onitsha Branch emerged champions, was the climax of a year-long festival of soccer.
As usual, we serve a hot dish of personal insight and perspectives in our interviews with accomplished personalities who have been there and done that. Our cover features a man who has seen the world, literally speaking, and taken its measure from the unique standpoint of a historian, a lawyer, an academic and an unapologetic Nigerian patriot. In this lively conversation, Professor Akin Oyebode, the retired professor of international law from the University of Lagos., offers his unique take on matters both domestic and global. You’ll enjoy it. We certainly did; there’s no dull moment with this man.
All these, plus our usual menu of tidbits, features and opinion, and you’ll agree that you have yet another collector’s item in your hands. Enjoy, and pass the word.
