Concerned Members of NBA’s Ikeja Branch Accuse the Trio of Ogunlana, Farounbi and Kappo, in Letter of Petition to Mahmoud

A number of solicitors belonging to the Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) have sent a strongly-worded petition to the office of the national president of the association, Abubakar Balarabe Mahmud, SAN, in which they accuse the following persons – Mr. Adeshina Ogunlana, the current/outgoing chairman of the Ikeja branch;  Mr. Yinka Farounbi, who served as chairman between 2014 and 2016; and Mrs. Derin Kappo, who was the branch treasurer during Mr. Farounbi’s tenure – of misdeeds ranging from the non-conversion of funds belonging to the branch, to gross abuse of office.

The petition, contained in a letter dated May 23, 2018, and signed by Mr. Richard Nwankwo; Dan C. Okoye, Esq.; Mr. Gabriel Opayinka and Mr. Olubunmi Martin Odeniyi, alleged that the aforementioned trio of officers compromised their integrity by their involvement in a number of shady activities, which they listed as follows:

  • The refusal of the duo of Farounbi and Kappo to effect a change of signatories to the NBA Ikeja domiciled at the Oba Akran branch of WEMA Bank in Ikeja, Lagos, with the active connivance of Mr. Ogunlana – despite the entreaties and protestations of the current branch secretary, Muna Esegine, Esq. and treasurer, Thelma Coco-Bassey, Esq. – and contrary to the provisions of relevant sub-articles of Article of the NBA’s Uniform Bye-Laws;
  • Their refusal to release the cheque-booklets, tellers and other bank-related documents to the current treasurer;
  • The subsequent depletion of the funds contained in the aforementioned NBA account in WEMA Bank without legal or moral justification;
  • The illegal transfers of funds by Mr. Farounbi and Mrs. Kappo from the WEMA account to the personal First Bank account of Mr. Ogunlana, who disburses these funds at will and without recourse to either the executive committee of the Ikeja Bar or the General Meeting, and in total disregard for the express provisions of the governing Bye-Laws.
  • The continued withdrawal of funds from the NBA Ikeja branch’s account by Mrs. Kappo, the former treasurer – in spite of her no longer being a member of the current executive – as the use of the branch’s properties and assets for private purposes by the former and outgoing chairman and their cronies in contravention of relevant laws;
  • The widespread suspicion that Mr. Ogunlana (the outgoing chairman) has sold off a number of vehicles belonging to the Ikeja branch without due authorization from its members; and
  • The monthly deductions from the branch’s account, ostensibly for refreshments, during its meetings – which the petitioners describe as excessive and unlawful.

In their letter, the petitioners, therefore, urged the Mahmud-led NBA national executive to institute an investigation into their complaints, and ensure appropriate sanctions against anyone found culpable – to include both criminal prosecution and the refund of all monies illegally withdrawn in the manner described above.

At the time of this writing, there has so far been no response from the trio being accused in the petition letter.
