Invasion of the High Court in Rivers State: An Assault on the Majesty of the Court
The recent invasion of the premises of the High Court of Rivers State, Port Harcourt Judicial Division by thugs, allegedly aided by policemen in an attempt to abort the sitting of a court of competent jurisdiction is not only highly condemnable, but also a threat to the independence of the judiciary.

It is disheartening that these mindless set of people showed total contempt for the temple of justice, desecrating it and locking out litigants, judicial officers and other workers within the premises thereby preventing them from carrying out their duties. This barbaric act is an assault on the majesty of the court, one that is totally unacceptable and a joke taken too far.
I urge the government to ensure that the perpetrators of this shameful act are brought to book and made to face the full wrath of the law. It is very important that our courts should be fortified and judicial officers protected in such a manner that they are able to carry out their statutory responsibilities without fear or favour.
It is very encouraging that the actions of these thugs and their accomplices have been condemned roundly by majority of Nigerians. I commend the President of the Nigerian Bar Association for rising in condemnation of the invasion and defending the independence of the judiciary and the sanctity of courts.
