Senior Advocate Rank Inconsistent with Republican Values – Prof. Chidi Odinkalu
A renowned legal and human rights scholar, Prof. Chidi A. Odinkalu has described the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) as inconsistent with the egalitarian values and principles of civic virtue upon which a Republic such as Nigeria was founded.

According to NEWSWIRE Magazine’s Lagos correspondent, Odinkalu said this in a lecture in Lagos in honour of Pa Olatunji Gomez, the most senior legal practitioner in the Lagos Bar on the occasion of the latter’s 90th birthday celebrations.

Like Pa Gomez, a vocal and long-standing opponent of the SAN cachet and its accompanying privileges, Odinkalu questioned the institution of state-sponsored rewards in a professional setting, saying it was subject to political influence and therefore open to abuse, as well as detrimental to the ability of younger lawyers to make a proper living from legal practice.

While conceding that the SAN rank was, at its best, was a benchmark of quality in the profession, Odinkalu nevertheless affirmed that it was borrowed from a monarchical dispensation (i. e. the United Kingdom), which is based on privilege, and therefore inherently unsuited to the advancement of Nigeria’s republican aspirations.
