Protest as Court Rejects Murder Charge Against MAPOLY Students

There was a minor drama yesterday when the Ogun State Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, rejected a charge of attempted murder filed by the Ogun Police command against the 20 students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, Abeokuta.

It was gathered that the Chief Magistrate, Adeola Adelaja of Magistrate Court 1 reportedly queried the inclusion of attempted murder in the charges preferred against the suspects who were not only students.

Adelaja argued that the suit was not properly filed.

It was further gathered that the suspects, including civil servants and an NYSC member, were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly taking part in a protest tagged #BlackWeek over the continuous hostility between the Ogun State Government and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, MAPOLY chapter.

The suspects, who were brought to the court premises on Wednesday, could not be arraigned as the charge contained in the charge sheet was reportedly rejected by the court.

A staff of the court at the registry department, who preferred anonymity, said the Magistrate told the prosecutor that the suit was not properly instituted.

The source also hinted that the court also demanded duplicate of the case file after properly filled.

The case was, however, not moved in the open court as the suspects were returned to the police custody.

It was, however, gathered that the case may be moved to today (Thursday).

Meanwhile, there are strong indications that many of the suspects arrested were not students of the Polytechnic and did not take part in the protest.

It was further gathered that those arrested included a civil servant in the service of Ogun State government who was on his way to his house and a Corps member who also appeared in the uniform of the National Youths Service Corps.

Further investigations revealed that students of the Polytechnic among the suspects were not more than five.
