2019 NBA Lagos Branch Law Week – Planning Committee Unveils Eventful Programme

Ahead of what promises to be one of the most eventful editions of its signature programme i. e. its annual Law Week, the Planning Committee of the 2019 Law Week of the Lagos Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), unveiled the programme of the event at a press briefing in Lagos on Tuesday, May 28, 2019.

Chairman, Media & Publicity Sub-Committee, Gloria Ireka; Chairman of the 2019 Law Week Planning Committee, Tola Oshobi (SAN), Chairman of the Lagos Bar branch, Chukwuka Ikwuazom and the Alternate Chairman of the Planning Committee, Andrew Malgwi during the press parley in Lagos

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the Lagos Bar branch, Chukwuka Ikwuazom noted that the event, which is slated to begin on Saturday, June 15 and end on Friday, June 21, 2019, would be the last one during the tenure of the present administration led by him.  In view of this, he said, his executive – and the Law Week Planning Committee –had put together a packed programme designed to make this edition one of the most memorable in the history of the nation’s premier bar branch. Tagged, ‘Law and Development in an Emerging Economy,’ the Law Week, Ikwuazom added, would feature many of the trademark events from previous editions such as a Health Walk, Elders’ Night, and so forth, in addition to new features like a visit to places like the Pacelli School for the Blind, among others.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the 2019 Law Week Planning Committee, Tola Oshobi, SAN, gave a further breakdown of the technical sessions during the one-week event – beginning with the opening ceremonies which, he said, would feature a keynote address by a Justice of Nigeria’s Supreme Court, as well as goodwill messages and presentations by other critical stakeholders in the nation’s legal firmament. Coming at the beginning of a new administration in Lagos State, the learned silk said, the 2019 Law Week would provide a platform for members of the in-coming government to engage stakeholders on its economic policies and projections for the people of the state. The technical sessions, which would attract a rich and distinguished faculty of speakers and panelists with formidable resumes to match, would cover such thought-provoking and topical themes as the following, among others:

  • The Nigerian Economy in 2019: Opportunities for Lawyers;’
  • Emerging Trends in Technology and Innovation
  • Smart Response of the Legal Profession to Technological Advancement
  • The 21st Century Workplace in Context: The Law Firm in Focus
  • Sustainable Development and Environmental Management
  • Rainmaking and Managing Clients’ Expectations
  • Reward System for Young Lawyers

In addition to the above sessions, Oshobi said, there would be discussions with members of the Bench on ways towards an effective administration and delivery of justice in Nigeria, as well as issues of mental health among lawyers. The Law Week will be capped by a Young Lawyers’ Forum, whose focus would be on Entertainment, Sports and Media Law – shining a spotlight on a fast-growing area of the Nigerian economy which today accounts for about 7% of the nation’s rebased Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The Planning Committee’s presentation was followed by a question-and-answer session in which a number of the media personnel expressed concern on the registration process, as well as the need for the NBA’s Lagos branch to seize the opportunity of the Law Week to take a more robust stand on some current issues in the country – notably the seeming retreat of the rule of law and the principle of due process in our national life.

One of the highlights of the 2019 Law Week would be the Closing Party, which the Planning Committee has promised would be every bit as colourful as last year’s much-acclaimed Ankara Party.

The vote of thanks at the end of the briefing was given by the Alternate Chairman of the Planning Committee, Andrew Malgwi, who pledged a Law Week experience which would linger in the memory for a long time to come.
