2018 NBA POLLS: To Adopt or to Endorse?
Although the ongoing conference of the Eastern Bar Forum (EBF) is ostensibly to strengthen the bonds of unity among practitioners of the law of eastern Nigerian extraction, to speak with one voice concerning the affairs of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), to measure progress made since the last such gathering and to chart a way forward, it is undeniable that this year’s conference is being held under the looming shadow of the forthcoming elections into national offices in the NBA.
Considering the fact that the former eastern region has a relatively bigger stake in this year’s polls than in previous ones, the spotlight has already beamed on possible candidates for the post of NBA President (which NEWSWIRE Magazine’s correspondent in Port Harcourt understands is being ceded to the former Eastern Region of the country) the air is rife with speculation as to what the EBF’s electoral strategy is, or should be.
Should the EBF leadership under its Governor, H. E. Chief Arthur Ojukwu, Esq. adopt a consensus candidate for NBA President, or should it merely endorse a preferred candidate as a way of pressuring potential rivals from the fray?
That question will undoubtedly weigh heavily on the minds of delegates as they gather on Saturday in the Garden City to discuss the Forum’s fortunes and future, and to reposition it for greater influence on the affairs of the NBA, in particular, and the welfare of legal practitioners in its sphere of influence.
