Donald Duke Clears the Air on His Plans for Homosexuals
People around the world are calling for equal rights for all, a movement which has also been taken up by the Nigerian youth.
2019 presidential aspirant Donald Duke had been reported to have promised legal protection for LGBT people in Nigeria while interviewing on the show “On the Couch with Falz & Laila.”
The former Cross River State Governor had been quoted to have said:
I don’t understand their sexuality, but I will not criminalise them. I will ensure that they have the protection of the law.
Donald Duke has however released a statement clarifying this.
“Homosexuality is a crime in Nigeria and ought to remain so,” Duke said, but he “would not go seeking homosexuals for prosecution.”
His full statement reads: “Recently, a statement I made during an interview concerning gay rights and homosexuality has been construed as my affirmation of homosexuality and same sex marriage. Nothing is further from the truth. Homosexuality is a crime in Nigeria and ought to remain the so. What I however did say is that I would not go seeking homosexuals for prosecution as this is liable to abuses and as such would rather not delve into the sexuality of an individual. For the avoidance of doubt, our law of homosexuality stands in fact and in my moral rectitude.”
