During her speech, the literary icon, Chimamanda Adichie, had challenged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on gender parity – in this case as far as the prize monies for the NBA male and female football competition was concerned. Noting the disparity between the prize monies for men and women (N500,000 and N200,000 respectively) Adichie had – tongue in cheek – urged the Association to make a BOLD TRANSITION (as the Conference theme says) regarding this disparity.
NEWSWIRE Law and Events Magazine correspondent in Lagos reports that about 10 minutes after Adichie’s speech, voluntary donations began pouring in from high net-worth individuals, in the hundreds of thousands and millions of naira. At the end of the day, the competing female teams were N3.2m richer.
Even the male teams were not left out of the largesse as they, too, got N500,000 richer.
