Topic: Introduction to Companies Income Taxation for Lawyers

Taxation is one of the most challenging areas of financial reporting for lawyers. It seems complicated for many lawyers because it stands mid-way between law and accounting; therefore requires an understanding of both. This session is a practical workshop that will combine practical exercises and examples to drive home key concepts in companies income taxation that will aid lawyers in developing a basic understanding of the fundamental principles of company’s income taxation.

At the end of the session, participants will be able to understand:

  • And identify income that is liable to tax under Nigerian law
  • How to compute profit on which tax is applied
  • The concept of tax depreciation (capital allowances) and tax losses
  • The concept of minimum tax and excess dividend tax
  • How tax is disclosed in financial statements
  • Tax compliance requirements for companies

The concept of tax residency under Nigerian law;   The liability of Nigerian companies to tax;  The liability of non- Nigerian companies in Nigeria;  The concepts of tax deduction, tax exemption and tax credit;  The concepts of tax depreciation (capital allowances);  Treatment of tax loss (difference between tax and accounting losses);  Minimum Tax and Excess Dividend Tax;  Tertiary Education Tax;  Tax Disclosures in the Financial Statement;  Tax compliance requirements;  Some contentious issues;  Conclusions;  Questions and Answers
