A Snippet of my blue Print for the NBA Benin Secretariat as I Vie for Secretary of the Benin Bar – Douglas Ogbankwa, Esq.

1. In concurrence with the Chairman of the Bar and Exco to operate a Health Insurance Scheme for Members and their families at affordable rates to access grade A hospitals in Benin for health related issues.

2. To set up a template to operate a functional co-operative society, where subscribers can access funds from time to time and where we can develop the Benin Bar Estate in Benin or environs.

3. To Set up the Bar Business Centre where typing and photocopies shall be at reduced price and can even be operated for 24 hours so that Lawyers can not be stranded in meeting deadlines.

4. We will insist that text messages must be sent when the Court is not Sitting in all Courts Edo State.

5. A dedicated phone line Shall be made available at the Bar House and you can call for enquiries with a Bar Services Desk Officer available during working hours and you can call the Secretary all round the clock even at midnight I will as I have always done take your calls.

6. The NBA Benin Directory shall be online real time, we shall have a functional website, which shall be www.nbabenin.org., where the information of Lawyers shall be displayed as an online directory the NBA Benin Directory will also be an App. on Play Store.

7. The Internet Resource Centre, the E-Library shall be made functional and Lawyers can do research there and access online Law Reports. The Notice of Meeting shall be sent directly to your mail ,ditto for the minutes of Meeting.

8. The Bar House shall be reorganised to give more life to it.

We shall now have the Table Tennis and Indoor Games Sections with Captains and there shall be quarterly competitions in the two sections.

9. Those rendering services at the Bar House should either shape in or shape out. The days of, “we do not have this or it is not cold will be over,”

10. We shall have a Close Unit Group (CUG) Mobile Lines for all Lawyer, where call from a Lawyer to another Lawyer, shall be free of Charge.

11. We shall do a Bar Chattel Endowment Funds where good buses will be purchased, used for Bar Activities and they can be hired by Lawyers at rock bottom price.

12. The NBA Benin Court Anti Corruption Scheme shall be initiated with the permission of the Chairman and Exco, where Court Staff and even Any Presiding Officer of any Court with evidence of Corruption shall be brought before the appropriate authority. The days of mobilisation for service will soon be over. The Bailiffs will, only plead for support and can no longer be of right.

13. The Independence of the Judiciary shall be a major focus. Judiciary money must be released directly to the Judiciary from the first line Charge as provided by the Constitution. That is what will guarantee the Rule of Law.

14. We shall operate a virtual Secretariat where a lot will be done online. We will explore the possibility of the live streaming of the NBA Benin Monthly Meetings and Law Weeks so our Members can follow same from any where in the World.

16. You do not need to come to the Bar House to submit your documents, you can use, Google link, our email or Whatsapp and it will be printed immediately for action.

17. We shall created branded calenders for Members, official branded files and envelopes. We must add some class to activities.

18. The NBA Benin Monthly Walk out shall hold from the Bar House to the Golf Course and Back with aerobics trainers who are even Lawyers directing.

19. All Lawyers going to the Police Station will operate under a Sheme steming from a Force Order which allows Lawyers coming under that scheme to be treated with utmost respect and dispatch. Any Police Man that molests a Lawyer under the scheme molests the Bar and he or she should wait for the repercussions.

20. There shall be constant capacity building with seminers, work shops and talks sponsored by donor agencies .We shall consider the possibility of exchange programmes with Bar Associations ,which will affect mostly young lawyers.
