Senate Receives Bill to Extend teachers’ Retirement Age to Sixty-five years

The Senate received President Muhammadu Buhari’s executive Bill on Wednesday, which seeks to raise the retirement age for teachers in the country from 60 to 65 years.

The Bill also recommends increasing the number of years of service for instructors from 35 to 40.

In a letter read aloud on the Senate floor by Senate President Ahmad Lawan, Buhari stated that the Bill provides for a unified retirement age for teachers in the country.

According to him, the decision to raise the retirement age and service years for teachers was made in accordance with Section 58(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

According to Buhari’s letter, headed “Transmission of the Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Bill 2021 to the National Assembly for consideration,”

“In accordance with Section 58 subsection 2 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), I submit before the Senate the Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Bill, 2021.

“The harmonised retirement age for teachers in Nigeria Bill 2021 intends to raise the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years, as well as the maximum number of years of service from 35 to 40 years.

“While appreciating your usual expeditious consideration of this submission, please, accepts Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration.”

Meanwhile, during plenary, Senate President Ahmad Lawan referred the President’s request for confirmation of Major General Farouk Yahaya as Chief of Army Staff of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Defense and Army Committees for further legislative work.

The Senate Committee on Defence, chaired by Senator Aliyu Wamakko, has been designated as the primary screening committee for the newly appointed Army Chief.

In recognition of World Teachers Day, Buhari approved an unique compensation scale and a new retirement age for teachers in October 2020.
