The Senate has given a significant nod to President Bola Tinubu’s proposal, which aims to enhance the compensation packages for key judicial officers in Nigeria. This proposal, which has now advanced to the second reading stage as a bill, specifically targets the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justices of the Supreme Court, President of the Court of Appeal, and other judicial officers across the nation.
The bill seeks to amend the Certain Political, Public, and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc) Act, No. 6, 2002 (as amended). Its provisions entail the removal of Section 2(b), Part II of the Schedule to the Act, and any other clauses pertaining to Judicial Office Holders.
If ratified into law by President Tinubu, the bill is slated to come into effect from January 1, 2024.
Following its successful passage for the second reading, the bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North). The committee is expected to present its findings within a timeframe of four weeks.
