By Chief Malcolm Emokiniovo Omirhobo .

At the just concluded 19th Daily Trust Dialogue prominent Nigerians, including traditional rulers, politicians, technocrats and experts, gathered at Abuja to deliberate on the theme ‘2023: The Politics, Economy and Insecurity’.

Amongst those present at the said event were , Abdulsalami Abubakar; a former military Head of State and father of the 1999 constitution who chaired the occasion, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, Malam Kabiru Yusuf , the Chairman of Media Trust Limited, the chief host of the event. Kadaria Ahmed.who moderated the programme. Mrs Ifueko Omoigui Okauru the guess speaker of the occasion. Other guests at the event included the Borno State Governor, Prof. Baba Gana Zulum; former Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbe; former Minister of State for Health, Arc. Gabriel Yakubu Aduku; leaders of regional groups and captains of industry, among others The lead paper was discussed by Dr Murtala Ahmed Rufa’i, an expert on banditry from Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto and Dr Hakeem Baba- Ahmed, the spokesman of Northern Elders Forum (NEF).

Regrettably and unfortunately these Nigerians wasted their time , energy and resources focusing on the poor economy, insecurity , politics, unsigned electoral legislation , overstretched security forces, power shift etc which are the symptoms of Nigeria’s illness instead on the cause of the illness which is the defective 1999 constitution .

If only these Nigerians can for once be honest with themselves they would have focused on how to treat the cause of Nigeria’s illness and not the symptoms. If these Nigerians really want any future election to be successful in Nigeria they need to reconvey this meeting to discuss how the defective 1999 constitution can be validated through a referendum nothing more nothing less. Without deluding ourselves , the conduct of a referendum to renegotiate the unity of Nigeria is the master key to the future of Nigeria .
