Barely weeks after a robust discussion about the fate of judicial authority in a democracy, (notably at last month’s gathering of legal luminaries at the NBA-SPIDEL Conference in Abuja), the issue is on the front burner again, in the wake of the recent invasion by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) on the residence of the Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, (Kano Division) Hon. Justice Ita Mbaba.
In an early reaction, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) through its General Secretary, Mr. Adesina Adegbite, vowed that the Association would resist any attempt from any quarter to intimidate the Judiciary. Reactions have also trailed the EFCC’s action from other stakeholders across the nation.
Though the EFCC’s motives for the invasion are unclear at the moment, the Justice himself was neither arrested nor assaulted, as the operatives were only able to gain access into the outer perimeter compound at the residence.
