A lawyer identified as Barrister Lucky Nonso Emeh, a staff member of the Ministry of Justice in Umuahia, was tragically shot and killed by unidentified gunmen at his residence in Aba, Abia State on Tuesday.

Emeh was reportedly gunned down in front of his home at No. 28 Umuatako Road, off Aba-Owerri Road.

The news of his death has caused fear among the Bench and Bar community, both in Aba and throughout the state

Emeh, who had recently buried his father, was last seen in Umuahia, the state capital, on Monday before travelling to Aba.

It was gathered that a colleague drove him to the Umuahia motor park, where he boarded a commercial bus to Aba.

The exact circumstances of how the gunmen began trailing him or the events leading to his death remain unclear, but it is believed to be a case of assassination

Sources said that before his brother could arrive at the scene, he had died in the pool of his blood.

Some members of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Aba Branch confirmed the death of Eme.

They said that though they wouldn’t want to preempt police investigation, but opined that there were indications that it was a case of assassination.

The leadership of the NBA is yet to react to the incident officially as efforts were on to visit the family to obtain firsthand information from them.

One of Emeh’s colleagues, Barr. Emperor Ogbonna, speaking on the killing of his colleague said: “I am mourning. The entire Bar and Bench in Abia state are mourning.

“My man, Barrister Lucky Chinonso Emeh was shot near his home at Umuatako two days ago.

“The last time I was with him was at the Museum in Aba about a month ago when we were laughing and talking law.

“Never knew that was the last time I was going to see this good man. A very respectful lawyer.

“He was never controversial like us. I wonder why anyone would want to snuff out the life of this good man. Rest in peace, my man.”

Another colleague of the deceased said: “This is sad news, my man is gone someone that just lost his father not quite long time ago. May God grant your soul everlasting rest.

“I was at the hospital on a visit to my Sick Aunty when he was brought in. The shock I had that night was inexplicable. My Jolly good fellow whom I attend the Same church with, just gunned down like that.”
