Police won’t protect officers involved in land grabs, rights violations — AIG

The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 16, Adebola Hamzat, has warned that the Nigeria Police Force will not shield officers involved in land grabbing or human rights abuses.

He stressed that the Force, under Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun, maintains zero tolerance for extortion and other misconduct.

Hamzat made this statement in Port Harcourt on Thursday while addressing journalists ahead of a lecture he delivered to officers during his familiarisation tour of the Rivers State Police Command.

“Corruption, extortion, and human rights abuses have been brought to my attention from my discussions with stakeholders in the state.

“Such actions tarnish the image of the Police, and I will address these issues with officers here,” Hamzat said.

He reiterated that the Police, under IGP Egbetokun, will not tolerate extortion, assuring the public that corrective actions are actively being enforced.

“We’ve said this repeatedly, and actions are being taken. I encourage people to interact with us, to inform us of any areas where we may be falling short,” he said.

The AIG urged citizens to report any erring officers, assuring them that all information provided would be treated with strict confidentiality and that officers found guilty would be duly sanctioned.

“Land grabbing, human rights abuses, corruption, and extortion are completely unacceptable.

“We will not cover for any officer involved in such acts. That’s why I’ve made my personal number available. I am not an armchair AIG; feel free to reach out,” he added.
