The Ogun State Police Command has announced the arrest of one Williams Adetunji, who is accused of selling unsafe and unapproved products he claimed could eliminate fibroids.
Police picked him up following a petition filed by the law firm Roberts Rasaaq Agboke and Associates on behalf of a young woman who reportedly suffered serious harm after using the substances promoted by Adetunji.
Speaking with journalists in Abeokuta on Tuesday, a representative of the firm, Hassan Yakubu, said their client experienced severe health complications after using the products. He alleged that Adetunji had been producing and marketing the items without any medical qualifications, licenses, or regulatory approval.
Yakubu identified the products as Enervate Capsules and Tumorex, claiming they contained caustic soda and other unsafe chemicals.
According to him, the client endured significant injuries and now requires reconstructive medical care costing about N1.3 million.
He added that other women have reportedly suffered similar complications after using the same products.
Some of them, he said, were removed from online groups where they attempted to raise concerns.
Yakubu stated, “Relying on the fake misrepresentations by Mr Adetunji, our client purchased the medications on or about 6th September 2023.
“Upon commencing use and following the explicit instructions, she suffered severe internal injury, including chemical burns, scarring, obstruction of the vaginal canal, prolonged abnormal bleeding, severe pain, reproductive complications, and long-term physiological consequences.
“Subsequent medical examination confirmed that the inserted product contained caustic, corrosive chemical agents, including caustic soda, resulting in damage to vaginal tissue.
“The damage is significant and requires reconstructive surgical intervention, currently estimated at 1,300,000, separate from the unresolved fibroid treatment which Adetunji falsely claimed to cure.”
He explained that soon after using the substances as directed, she suffered various internal injuries.
Medical examinations, he said, later showed the product contained corrosive agents.
The law firm said it had petitioned the police in November, asking that Adetunji be arrested and prosecuted under relevant laws.
Confirming the development, the Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the suspect is already in custody.
“The man is in our custody, I have confirmed from the O/C of the Anti-cultism unit. The investigation is ongoing and other complaints are coming to identify him as the person who sold the drug to them, so the investigation is ongoing and as soon as that is completed, he will be charged in court,” Babaseyi stated.
Recall that in Febraury, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control proposed the death penalty for drug peddlers.
The Director-General of the agency, Mojisola Adeyeye, argued that only strict penalties would deter drug peddlers, especially when their actions result in the deaths of children.
