Only two out of 27 lawmakers were reelected – Outgoing Niger Speaker laments

The outgoing Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Mr Abdullahi Wuse has lamented the number of lawmakers reelected to the House, saying out of twenty-seven, only two made it back to the Assembly.

Wuse made this disclosure during his valedictory speech and the dissolution of the 9th Assembly.

Those reelected to join the 25 newly elected members to the 10th Assembly include Mohammed Haruna of the All Progressives Congress, APC, representing-Bida II constituency and Idris Vatsa, APC, of Lapai constituency.

According to him, “this situation may not allow the legislative arm of government to grow as it is supposed to.

“Parties, whether the ruling party or the opposition, should devise a mechanism that would allow members to stay in the House for a long time to gather more experience. This is because legislative matters are very serious business which cannot be undermined in nation building.”

The Speaker advised the incoming members to set a clause that would offer the leadership of the House, particularly the office of the speaker protection, to forstal unending impeachments, as well as afford the speaker opportunity for a fair hearing in situations where impeachment was unavoidable.

He also revealed that the 9th Assembly passed 66 bills into law in four years, while appreciating his colleagues, staff of the House for the support and trust given to the leadership since 2019.

Wuse then begged `Nigerlites’ to forgive them where they have done wrong, saying, “anyone we have wronged knowingly and unknowingly should forgive us because we are human and are bound to make mistakes.’’

Taking turns to contribute, members of the House thanked their constituents for the opportunity given to them to serve, while asking for forgiveness in areas they erred.
