The former army Chief of Staff, Gen. Tukur Buratai was very wrong in his call on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike to apologize to the army, and describing his altercation with a military personnel in uniform as raising a security issue and causing an embarrassment to the Commander-in-Chief.

That response from Gen. Buratai brings to the fore the arrogance of Nigerian military officers who refuse to subordinate themselves to civilian authority. It is the military that should be apologizing to the Minister; he is a principal representative and senior official of the Federal Government, who is carrying out his legitimate duties.

For Gen. Buratai to insinuate that the uniform of a junior officer deserves more respect than the physical presence of the Minister clearly depicts the arrogance that has led the Nigerian military to engage in a number of objectionable actions and demonstrate untoward attitudes towards civilians.

On the contrary, the Chief Of Defence Staff (CDS) should apologize to the Minister and the President whom Wike represents, and to all of us the civilian population of Nigeria for the embarrassment meted out to a serving Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Today it is Wike. Tomorrow, it could be another Minister. It is this level of disrespect for civilian authority that drives the military into the irresponsible attitude of trying to carry out a forceful removal of a democratic government through coups d’etat.

All democrats in nigeria must condemn this act now, and renew their resolve to fight for our democratic system of government.
