Ogun LG Polls: PDP Drags OGSIEC to Court

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) to a State High Court in Abeokuta.

The PDP has asked the court to prevent OGSIEC and its Chairman, Babatunde Osibodu, from interfering in the party’s activities.

The party requested the court to prevent Osibodu from recognizing Leke Shittu, a loyalist of late Buruji Kashamu, as the party’s head.

OGSIEC has turned over all PDP forms to Shittu, notwithstanding Osibodu’s claim that he was dealing with the genuine group based on documentation presented by both parties to the commission.

This is happening despite efforts by the Bukola Saraki-led reconciliation committee to make peace between the Ladi Adebutu and Kashamu factions of the PDP in the state.

It was revealed by our newsagent that after the reconciliation, Chief Sikirulahi Ogundele was confirmed as the State Chairman of the PDP in Ogun at a reunion held at the party secretariat.

But as OGSIEC released the time table for the July 24 local government election, the infighting within the two factions reared its ugly head again when Shittu approached Osibodu as the head of the Kashamu faction and succeeded in getting the nod of the electoral body.

Recently, the party Chairman, Ogundele and other leaders of the party led a protest against the electoral umpire, but the commission did not change its stand.

Dissatisfied, the party on Friday filed a suit against the commission, its chairman and Shittu.

The party spokesman, Akinloye Bankole, confirmed this in an interview with news agents on Saturday.

“We have filed a complaint against OGSIEC, Osibodu, and Leke Shittu.
We have formally filed our concerns with the court, and we anticipate that they will contact us between Monday and Wednesday to begin the process.

“The party asked the court to stop all of OGSIEC’s irregularities.
We charged Osibodu with contempt of court because there is a court order in our favor.
We also want the court to prevent Shittu from posing as the party’s representative,” Bankole added.

The party Publicity Secretary urged party members to be calm, saying that the attempt by some “politicians in power” to keep the PDP out of the upcoming local government elections would fail.
