NBA IKEJA 2023 LAW WEEK – 9TH – 16 JUNE, 2023.
INTRODUCTION:
The Nigerian Bar Association (Ikeja Branch) is once again inviting the legal profession and community to participate in its 2023 Law Week programme. This year’s programme focuses on the Nigerian Lawyer, Justice in the community as well as other nascent issues that impact Legal Practitioners within the profession as the approachable first contact point with the justice delivery system for the public.
Through a series of programs lined up for the week and a rich team of carefully selected, experienced, formidable, successful and highly inspiring speakers, the NBA Ikeja intends to highlight the important role lawyers and indeed, the legal profession plays in the society and the undeniable need for lawyers to maintain in healthy life style in seeking and administering justice. Also, the NBA Ikeja recognizing the absolute need for lawyers to consistently earn a decent living through professional law practice in this economically challenging and evolving 21stcentury, has chosen a well thought out theme for the law week program which is; “THE NIGERIAN LAWYER: EARNING WEALTH AND KEEPING FIT IN THE CHALLENGING TIMES”.
The details of the mouthwatering and intellectually stimulating week is as follows;
LAW WEEK SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES:
Monday the 5th of June, 2023 at 10am: Pre-Law Week Press Conference to be held at the Bar Centre, Ikeja to create awareness for the forthcoming Law Week programme to commence officially on the 9th of June, 2023 and to run till the 16th of June, 2023.
Friday, June 9th, 2023:
OPENING CEREMONY
The opening ceremony to flag off the Law Week will be at 10:00am.
12:00 pm: THE NIGERIAN YOUNG LAWYERS: PROSPECTS & CHALLENGES
This is an event specially organized for every lawyer but more particularly, the Young Members of the Ikeja Branch in which every peculiar challenges bedeviling young lawyers in the profession particularly in terms of capacity building and value enhancement will be addressed and demystified by no other person than the immediate past NBA President, Mr. OlumideAkpata, Mrs. Tokunbo Osinowo and Mr. WemimoOgunde and the venue will be at the Bar Centre, Ikeja.
2:00pm: JUMAT PRAYERS
The Friday Jumat prayers will be at 2:00pm for the Muslimfaithfuls where prayers will be offered for the success of the program.
6:00pm: WELCOME COCKTAIL PARTY
The events of the day will wind down with a cocktail party at 6:00pm at the Bar Centre, Ikeja sponsored by one of the Branch’s illustrious sons – Mr. Kemi Pinheiro SAN.
SATURDAY, JUNE 10th, 2023
The day is designated for sports and exercises in line with the theme of the programme. It is a common knowledge that most legal practitioners are guilty of living a sedentary lifestyle with countless hours in a sitting position waiting for cases to be called and as many hours sitting down doing research and drafting processes without taking out time to exercise, which is vital for mental alertness and overall wellbeing. This event was incorporated for this reason in hopes that after the program, lawyers would be challenged and motivated to incorporate sports and fitness/exercise into their daily routine. The event will commence at 7:30am with a Fitness Walk and Aerobics session. Immediately after will be a football match between NBA IkejaBranch Female Team Vs NBA Ikorodu Branch Female Team which will take us to 10:00am when there will be a Tug of War game for all interested in participating. The sport activities will end with a football match between the NBA Ikeja Branch Male Team Vs the NBA Lagos Branch Male Team. All events will take place at the Police Collage, Ikeja GRA.
SUNDAY, JUNE 11TH, 2023.
There will be a non-denominational Thanksgiving Service at the Bar Centre, Ikeja for the Christian faithful at 10:00am where prayers will be offered for the success of the program.
TUESDAY, JUNE 13TH, 2023
10:00am: Female Lawyers in Legal Practice: Overcoming the Barriers of Gender Bias and Stereotypes.
The seasoned Speakers for this event are Mrs. Funke Adekoya SAN, Mrs. Titilola Akinlawon SAN and Mrs. AbimbolaAkeredolu SAN. These heavily experienced female legal practitioners have built daunting professional profiles over the years while balancing family life through it all. They will share their wealth of experience with the female lawyers in particular with regards to the peculiar challenges that female lawyers face in the profession as well as the balancing act to be done by female lawyers who have to function as wives and mothers whileperforming their jobs optimally without any sector suffering neglect. The program starts at 10:00am at the Bar Centre, Ikeja.
Part of the objectives of the Law Week program is to help lawyers improve their financial structure and evolve best practices for the growth of not just legal knowledge but of also, the business side of their practice. The afternoon session for this day takes care of all these aspects. It starts at 2:00pm and the speaker for the event is Dr. Babatunde Ajibade SAN. He will be speaking onthe following topics
(a) Growing your Clientele and Proper Billing for Legal Services and
(b) Financial Planning for Lawyers. The venue for the session is at The Bar Centre, Ikeja.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14TH, 2023.
LEGAL CLINIC /COLLABOPRATION WITH THE LAGOS STATE DOMESTIC AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE AGENCY
The NBA Ikeja Branch will as part of her law week programme be working in collaboration with the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) of the Lagos State Government through this Legal Clinic in order to create awareness on the sensitive services available to victims of domestic and sexual violence and on the coordinated community response to domestic and sexual violence in Lagos State and indeed in Nigeria as well as on the legal framework for the protection of victims and prosecution of offenders. The Legal Clinic commences at 10:00 am and the venue will span across strategic locations around Ikeja, Ojota and Ogba.
VARIETY NIGHT
The Variety Night of the NBA (Ikeja Branch) is customarily known as a night of entertainment, made up of a variety of acts including musical performances, comedy, dancing, games, etc. It will be an avenue to unwind and network in a relaxed atmosphere from the activities of the day and interact socially with our colleagues and guests as well. It starts at 6:00pm and the venue is at the Bar Centre, Ikeja GRA.
THURSDAY, JUNE 15TH, 2023
ALAO AKA-BASHORUN LECTURE; TOPIC-:”GO TO COURT; IS THERE A REMEDY FOR NIGERIA’S AILING JUSTICE SYSTEM”
Traditionally, the Alao Aka-Bashorun lecture is one of the hallmarks of the NBA (Ikeja Branch) Law Week Programme. The speakers for this event are Professor Chidi Odinka Kalu, Mr. Adeyinka Olumide Fusika SAN and Mr. Lawal Pedro SAN. The event will touch on the maladies that have put the justice system in Nigeria in an almost vegetative state and explorepossible and practical solutions to rejuvenate and rehabilitate the justice system in Nigeria as a vehicle of social change and to restore public faith in its effectiveness in maintaining order, social, economic and even cultural equilibrium in the society. The event starts at 9:00am and the venue is the Bar Centre, Ikeja GRA.
Wellness Agenda: The Physical and Mental Health of the Nigerian Lawyer-what you must know and Do.
This, like every other session will be a hybrid session commencing at 2:00pm. This will be a discussion amongst colleagues on the impact of the challenging times we are all operating in and its impact on our physical and mental health. As we engage ourselves on this forum, we hope to draw from the experiences of each other and exchange ideas on how best to function as professionals while still keeping our wellbeing as a priority so we can remain well-rounded individuals.
FRIDAY, JUNE 16TH, 2023 LAW DINNER
This event will be the culmination of the events of the entire week. Any law dinner is always marked with class, elegance and panache but the NBA (Ikeja Branch) Law Dinner is always a spectacular event that attracts the crème-de-la-crème of not just the legal profession but the society as a whole. However, it is an exclusive event to which access is only assured by purchase of Dinner Cards or Tables which is being sold at The Bar Centre, Ikeja for N20,000.00 per card. However, for the first 40 young lawyers of the Ikeja Branch who have paid their Practicing Fees and Branch dues, the dinner Cards will be sold to them at the discounted rate of N10,000.00. Also, the price of a Dinner Table for 10 is N500,000.00 The venue for this year’s dinner is the prestigious event centre “The Citadel” located at the Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun, Lagos and will begin at 4:00pm.
AFTER DINNER PARTY
As part of the 2023 Law Week Committee desire to ensure that Ikeja Lawyers mingle and socialize optimally amongst themselves, there will be an after-dinner party for night birds who may still have the desire t0 party on into the night after the Law Dinner has officially come to an end. The location will be at Pool Side of the Public Service Club, Sobo ArobioduStreet, GRA, Ikeja and it will start from 10:00pm prompt.
