Four out of the five branches of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, in Lagos State will pay a call-to-action visit to the Executive Governor of the State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday, April 20, 2021. The four branches are NBA Badagry, NBA Epe, NBA Ikorodu and NBA Lagos. The NBA branch Chairmen had an emergency meeting on Sunday wherein it was agreed that all five branches should meet with the Governor on that date. However, NBA Ikeja opted out on grounds that it had scheduled to hold its protest on Monday.
The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, commenced a nationwide indefinite strike on Monday, April 6 over the non-implementation of judicial financial autonomy as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.
In addition, President Muhammadu Buhari had signed an Executive Order granting financial autonomy to the judiciary and state house of assembly in May 2020, after several agitations.
However, the gazetting of the order was suspended after Buhari met with governors, who later expressed concern over its constitutionality.
The Governors, through their respective Attorneys-general, brought an application before the Supreme Court asking it to clearly define the rights and obligations of all the parties.
