Lagos NBA Honours Senior Lawyers at Colourful Elders Nite
The place was the Boardwalk Event and Conference Centre – a fashionable leisure establishment located in the upscale Lagos suburb of Victoria Island. The occasion was the much-anticipated Elders’ Night – an evening set aside by the Lagos branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to pay tribute to its elder-statesmen and retired senior colleagues, including Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs).
NEWSWIRE Law and Events Magazine’s correspondent in Lagos reports that the event was hosted by Mr. Ebun Sofunde, SAN to support the efforts by the Premier Bar to honor the achievements of the past and to prepare well for the future. In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the Lagos branch of the NBA, Mr, Chukwuka Ikwuazom, Esq. expressed joy at the innovation, and also the resourcefulness of his team in making the event a success.
In his comments, the host of the evening, Mr. Ebun Sofunde, SAN offered a glimpse of what the practice of law was during his heyday and those of his peers, and called on younger lawyers to improve their attitudes in and out of court, their dressings and manners, Mr. Sofunde also called on Judges to henceforth insist on oral submissions by lawyers in court, describing the recourse to written arguments as a system of the general laxity that has crept into the practice of law in recent years. He ended by suggesting that a selection of students from the Law School be allowed to attend future events of this kind – with the objective of connecting them with the living embodiments of Nigeria’s legal history and giving them the benefit of their experiences.
One of Mr. Sofunde’s colleagues, Osaro Eghobamien, SAN, regaled the assembled guests with witty anecdotes of his association with Mr. Sofunde, SAN, as guests sampled a rich menu of delicacies throughout the evening.
NEWSWIRE correspondent reports that the guests were also entertained during a brief musical interlude by a young classical soloist, Mr. Chukwunonso Nkamuke, who performed a couple of compositions, as well as with a medley of contemporary popular music.
The vote of thanks was given on behalf of the Lagos NBA Law Week Planning Committee by its Chairman, Mr. Tola Oshobi, SAN, as the evening came to an end in an atmosphere of camaraderie and conviviality.
