Over 200 million girls and women alive today have experienced Female Genital Mutilation( FGM). In 2021, an estimated 4.2 million girls are at risk of being cut. In 25 countries where FGM is routinely practiced and data are available, an estimated 68 million girls will be cut between 2015 and 2030 unless concerted and accelerated action is taken.
The 6th of February is the International Day of Zero Tolerance For Female Genital Mutilation with the theme: “Accelerating Investment to End Female Genital Mutilation.” As a result, International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, Lagos State Branch is set to hold its advocacy, awareness outreach and a town hall meeting in commemoration of the day in a community-led engagement event promoting public education on the elimination of FGM where it still exists. The discuss hopes to address the origin of Female Genital Mutilation, Challenges, effects,, statistics and eradication of such practices.
