No fewer than 10 illegal miners were arrested on Saturday morning, in Uyange forest in Akakmkpa LGA of Cross River State.
They were picked up by the Cross River State Anti-Illegal Mining Committee and Taskforce led by their chairman, Paul Effiong.
Those arrested were handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.
The illegal miners could not present or convince the taskforce that they were operating with licenses or within unapproved coordinates.
The taskforce also confiscated equipment used by the suspects.
Effiong reaffirmed the government’s zero tolerance for illegal mining, warning that more enforcement actions will follow across the state despite intimidation by big masquerades behind the illegal miners.
The operation by the taskforce is said to be part of the state government’s intensified efforts to combat environmental degradation and unauthorized exploitation of mineral resources.
