In a bold move, the Ikeja Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, affectionately dubbed the ‘Tiger Bar,’ has issued a demand to the Annual General Conference Planning Committee: revert the approved registration fees for the 2024 conference back to the 2023 rates or brace for a complete boycott from the branch.
At its monthly general meeting convened on 5th May 2024, the branch unanimously decried what it termed as “exorbitant” fees sanctioned by the NBA National Executive Council for the forthcoming Annual General Conference set to be held in Lagos State this August.
The approved fees for the 2024 AGC range from N50,000 for an early bird registration for young lawyers (1-9 years post-call) to a staggering N750,000 for on-site registration for Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Attorneys General, and Benchers. This marks a substantial escalation from the 2023 rates, which spanned from N15,000 to N600,000 for the same categories.
In a resolute resolution, the Tiger Bar, renowned for its tenacity, condemned the steep hike in registration fees as “unjust” and demanded an immediate rollback to the previous year’s rates. The branch cautioned that failure to heed this demand would result in a total boycott of the conference by its members.
The Tiger Bar’s stance emerges against the backdrop of mounting apprehensions within the legal community concerning the escalating cost of attending the NBA’s flagship event. This event is perceived as a pivotal platform for professional growth, networking, and deliberations on pivotal issues impacting the legal profession and the nation at large.
As of now, the NBA National Executive Council and the AGC Planning Committee have yet to respond to the ultimatum issued by the Tiger Bar. However, the prospect of a boycott from one of the NBA’s most sizable and influential branches could potentially cast a shadow on the conference’s attendance and overall success.
