The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has refuted claims linking him to a circulated WhatsApp message that reportedly discourages protests in Lagos State. The IGP’s clarification comes amid growing concern and confusion over a message circulating on social media platforms that appeared to come from the police.

The alleged WhatsApp message, which includes questions about why Lagos is a frequent protest target and suggests starting protests in other states, has been widely shared online. This has sparked discussions and controversy among the public, particularly in light of planned nationwide protests scheduled from August 1st to 10th.

In a statement issued late Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) categorically denied any association with the message. According to Adejobi, the message does not reflect the views or policies of the NPF and is not an official communication from the police.

“The message, which poses several questions and opinions about protests, does not essentially represent the ideals or views of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement read. “We urge everyone to disregard this message and other similar contents purportedly from the NPF as the Force makes all communications via its official channels.”

The NPF emphasized its commitment to maintaining peace and order across the country and denounced any message that could incite division, violence, or destruction. The police also cautioned against the spread of misinformation and fake news, stating that such actions are criminal offenses punishable under the Cybercrime law.

With the planned nationwide protests set to address economic hardship and other pressing issues, the IGP and the NPF encourage all Nigerians to engage in peaceful and constructive activities. They urge the public to rely on official communications for accurate information and to refrain from spreading misleading content.

The statement underscores the NPF’s dedication to ensuring public safety and its opposition to any forms of misinformation that could exacerbate tensions.
