The all-too-serious business of ‘Taking the Lead’ in confronting Nigeria’s myriad problems may not be rocket science, as some stakeholders at the 61st annual general conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Port Harcourt would confidently assert, but it is a pretty exhausting business. So it was quite understandable that conferees would converge in their numbers at the Main Event Hall on the grounds of the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in the Elekahia district of the city for a highly welcome relief at the President’s Dinner.
As in past get-togethers of this kind, it was a themed event – this time on the phenomenon of Bond, James Bond – a rather timely reminder of the enduring appeal of the 007 series, following the recent release of ‘No Time to Die’, the latest installment in the series.
NEWSWIRE Law and Events Magazine’s correspondent in the Rivers State capital reports that the Dinner was graced by three sitting state Governors: the host Governor, Nyesom Wike, CON; Ekiti State Governor and Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Kayode Fayemi; and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State. Also in attendance were two former state Governors: Celestine Omehia of Rivers, and Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State.
In his welcome remarks, NBA President Olumide Akpata was full of praises for the Omubo Frank-Briggs-led Technical Committee on Conference Planning for its excellence in making the 2021 conference experience a memorable one.
The 3 state Chief Executives also took turns to speak – with their leader, Gov. Fayemi in particular debunking the notion, prevalent in the legal community, that state Governors were a serious impediment to the actualization of judicial autonomy and independence in their respective states. He praised his host, Gov. Wike, as an exemplar of the Governors’ commitment to autonomy – as seen in his generous and consistent support for the judiciary in Rivers State.
The Dinner was a culmination of days of social interaction and sporting contests – namely in football, table tennis, golf and scrabble. The winners in the various disciplines were presented with their respective prizes during the Dinner by NBA President Akpata; Govs. Fayemi and Makinde, among others.
The rest of the evening was devoted to music, fine dining and networking.
