FIDA NIGERIA, LAGOS BRANCH INAUGURATES FIDA NIGERIA, UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS STUDENTS’ CHAPTER

The members of FIDA Nigeria, Lagos branch went on a courtesy visit/inauguration of FIDA Nigeria, University of Lagos Students’ Chapter at the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, on the 22nd day of May 2024.

The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Ige O. Bolodeoku welcomed us and was delighted to have Fidans in his office. The Chairperson of FIDA Lagos, Mrs. Chinwe Efobi delivered a speech on the courtesy visit and the inauguration of the Students’ Chapter.

In her speech, she noted that the inauguration of the Students’ Chapter is a milestone, which represent not only the expansion of our esteemed organisation, but also a significant step towards empowering the next generation of legal professionals who will champion the course of justice, equity, and the protection of human rights. She expressed her gratitude to the Dean for his unwavering support and for providing a fertile ground where future legal luminaries are nurtured.

She said further that the involvement of the student will not only benefit their personal and professional growth, but also amplify the impact of FIDA’S mission across Nigeria. The Dean was subsequently presented with an Award of Appreciation for supporting the Inauguration of the Students’ Chapter. The program for the Students’ Chapter inauguration started at 3:20pm with the second Stanza of the National Anthem, followed by FIDA Anthem and the Women song.

The Assistant Secretary/Coordinator, Students’ Chapter, Ms. Ganiyat Adisa, welcomed and appreciated the students for showing interest in the program and to be members of the Students’ Chapter, thereafter, introduced the FIDA team present.

The Chairperson, Mrs. Chinwe Efobi, gave her opening remarks and reiterated her speech delivered at the Dean’s office. She stated that students are the torchbearers of tomorrow’s legal profession, and the establishment of this Chapter is a testament to the encouragement and cooperation of the faculty of law. She said the journey will encompass a wide range of activities; from legal aid clinic, community outreach, advocacy programmes, seminars and workshops that will enhance the student understanding of both local and international landscapes. These experiences will not only enrich their academic journey but also instil in them the values of service, leadership, and justice.

The Assistant Secretary/Coordinator read a brief history of FIDA, its vision and mission. she informed the students about what FIDA stands for, her main aims and objectives, which are basically to promote, protect and preserve the rights of indigent women and children in the society.

Also, rendering free legal services (probono) via the legal clinic, sensitization, and advocacy. She equally enlightened the students on the main purpose of the team’s visit and the need to have a student chapter, which will keep them abreast of the activities of FIDA Nigeria, so that their transition from Student Associates to full members will be seamless, and to carry out similar activities on campus and its environs. She informed them of the FIDA Nigeria, Uniform Byelaw for Student Chapter and the FIDA NIGERIA, Student Membership Standard of Operation, which guides the affairs of the chapter.

She highlighted some of the sections of the said Byelaw, especially sections 3 (objectives of the organisation), 4 (Means of achieving objectives), 6 (persons eligible for membership), 8 (mode of operation), 14 (term of office), 15 (Election of officers), 16 (Monthly General Meeting) and 19 (Appointment of Matrons).

She emphasised on need to have an election to choose their representatives who would serve as executive officers of the Chapter. She made them understand that it’s affordable to be a member, and the registration fee is N500,00 (five hundred naira) only, and subsequently, they can decide on their own annual dues and levies which will be used to run their activities. She encouraged them to participate actively, and in the process, network and build capacity. The Chairperson, Mrs. Chinwe Efobi inaugurated the FIDA Nigeria, University of Lagos Students’ Chapter on behalf of the branch by asking the students to raise their right hand to swear an oath to abide by the rules and constitution of the FIDA NIGERIA. We had 101(One hundred and one) female law students ranging from 100 level to 500 level who filled the membership forms and paid their registration fees. They were thrilled and happy to be FIDA Lagos Student Associates. Three students made comments on what they have learnt at the program. In compliance with Section 19 of the said Students’ Chapter Byelaw, one of the Matrons was present in the person of Mrs. Roli Craig, who spoke and advise the students extensively.

She was decorated as a Matron by Mrs. Bolatumi Animashaun. The Law Student Society Vice President, Ms. Bessie Obort Ofuka who worked tirelessly to bring the students together, appreciated, and thanked Fidans on behalf of the students. She noted that they would be committed to the course of FIDA and the Students’ Chapter. IEC materials in the form of FIDA pamphlets and fliers were distributed to the students. Mrs. Adejoke Layi-Babatude advised the students and gave the vote of thanks.

Finally, we had a photo session, after which refreshments (snacks and water) were shared to the students.
