Ex-Bayelsa APC deputy chair faults alleged suspension of Lokpobiri, Lyon says ‘it is null and void’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State has suspended several key members, including Minister of State for Petroleum, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, and 2019 governorship candidate, David Lyon, over alleged anti-party activities.

The suspensions were announced by the APC executives in Ekeremor and Southern Ijaw Local Government Areas, citing alleged anti-party activities and factionalization of the party at the state level.

Among those suspended are Peres Biewari, Commissioner for Lands and Survey; Jonathan Amos, former state party chairman; Godbless Diriwari, ex-officio member, national executive of the party; Omiebi Fuoebi; Sabi Morgan, LGA APC Youth leader; and Timiondi Fabofieghe, APC chairman, ward 4, Southern Ijaw LGA.

The Chairman of APC in Ekeremor Local Government Area, Mitin Eniekenemi, confirmed the suspension, stating that the action was based on the findings of an internal disciplinary committee set up under Article 21.3(1) of the APC Constitution.

However, a former Deputy Chairman of the party in the state, Ogeibiri Orubebemienkumor, has dismissed the suspension as “laughable” and “null and void,” citing a valid court order that nullified the party’s congresses in 2021.

Orubebemienkumor argued that the suspension constitutes contempt of court and should be disregarded. He noted that the Bayelsa State chapter of the APC does not have an existing executive from the state level down to the ward level across the state due to the court order.

Another party chieftain, Alex Blankson, also described the suspension as laughable, stating that the individuals involved have no authority to convene meetings or suspend party members due to the ongoing court case. Blankson called on the National Working Committee of the party to establish an acting committee for the party in Bayelsa to restore order within the state chapter.
