Electoral violence: Court remands majority leader Doguwa in prison

The Majority Leader, House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, was on Wednesday  remanded in prison custody by a chief magistrates’ court in Kano on Wednesday.

The lawmaker, alongside one other suspect, was charged with five counts bordering on unlawful possession of firearm, mischief, culpable homicide and disturbance of public peace.

Doguwa was arrested after he was accused of leading thugs, who attacked and set on fire the office of the New Nigeria Peoples Party  at Tudun Wada, Kano, where two people were also burnt to death on Sunday during the collation of results of the just concluded elections.

Also Alhassan was accused of shooting to death and injuring others during the raid on the NNPP Tudun Wada Office.

The magistrate, Ibrahim Yola, said he had no jurisdiction to entertain the charges.
The court, however, ordered that the defendants be remanded in prison custody.

A credible source at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, had told our correspondent that Doguwa was arrested by the policewhile he on his way to  board a flight to Saudi Arabia for Lesser Hajj.
