A High Court in the Federal Capital Territory has awarded N25m in damages against the popular gossip blogger, Linda Ikeji for allegedly defaming one Mrs. Ajibola Ajayi in respect of an article published on her blog in January 2017.
Mrs. Ajayi had, in her suit, sued the blogger in respect of an article which cited her (Mrs. Ajayi) as having described protesting students of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso in an Instagram post as a “generation of mannerless children.”
The judgment, with suit number FCT/CV/667/2018: Mrs Ajibola Ajayi v. Linda Ikeji was delivered on April 12, 2022. In it, the Court held that Ms. Ikeji’s publication was false and malicious, and that the evidence before the Court showed that the Defendant knew that the Instagram account with the username “conceited_csj” did not belong to Ajayi. The publication of the article, the Court, therefore, held that the Claimant was exposed to ridicule. Awarding general and exemplary damages in the sum of N25m against Ms. Ikeji, the Court instruced her to publish a written apology to the Claimant in three national tabloids.
The blogger has since reacted to the judgment, indicating her intention to appeal. Writing on the twitter page of the law firm representing Mrs. Ajayi, Ikeji said: “How can you file in Lagos and Abuja on the same issue? And then you don’t even inform me? Hope you’re ready for Appeal and Supreme Court and a countersue? Tell your client to get ready!”
