The Federal Government has issued a new warning to Nigerians about fake COVID-19 vaccines that are circulating throughout the region.
Dr. Osagie Ehanire, Minister of Health, issued the notice on Monday during the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19’s weekly briefing.
The Minister also announced that NAFDAC, Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, is currently working on measures to evaluate and approve more vaccines for use in the country.
“As a result of foreign policy organizations’ warnings about the high incidence of false COVID-19 vaccines said to be in use, and evidence of threats of adverse effects reported after vaccination, FG has decided to take action,” he said.
“In addition to increasing vaccination, we increased monitoring at our ports of entry to reduce the chance of coronavirus strains which are more infectious and virulent from being imported.”
COVID-19 cases are on the rise in Asia and the Americas, and these strains are thought to be to blame.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported 37 new cases of COVID-19 in six states on Monday night.
This brings the total number of recorded cases in the country to 164,756, with 2,062 fatalities, while about 154,963 have been successfully treated and discharged.
